The Afikoman אֲפִיקוֹמָן, which
means dessert is a half-piece of matzo (smaller
half) which was
broken during Yachatz and aside to be eaten as a dessert before benching. It is
customary to have the children grab it and hide it to keep them involved and up
for the seder.
The afikoman is a
substitute for the Korban Pesach the last thing eaten at the Pesach Seder
during the 1st and 2nd Temple.
The taste of matzo should
be the last thing you eat so that the taste remains in your mouth. It should be
eaten before midnight while leaning and after it only coffee tea or water are
allowed.
